TikTok, a leading social media platform known for its influence in music discovery, has recently launched a new feature called Add to Music App. This feature is set to revolutionize how users discover and consume music on the platform. It allows them to save the songs they stumble upon on TikTok to their preferred music streaming services. The feature is being rolled out in collaboration with major music streaming services, including Amazon Music and Spotify, and is currently available to users in the US and UK.

“Add to Music App takes this process a step further, creating a direct link between discovery on TikTok and consumption on a music streaming service, thereby generating even greater value for artists and rightsholders.” – Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development.

How Does ‘Add to Music App’ Work?

This feature has been designed to cater to music fans who wish to capture and save songs they discover on TikTok for later enjoyment. A button labeled ‘Add Song‘ will appear next to a track’s name at the bottom of a TikTok video in the ‘For You Feed,’ inviting users to save the song to their chosen music streaming service. On pressing this button for the first time, users can decide where to keep the harmony among the music apps installed on their phones. The track is then saved to a default playlist on the selected music streaming service. However, users also have the option to add the way to a new playlist or an existing playlist of their choice. Once a user has used the ‘Add to Music App‘ feature for the first time, the chosen music app becomes the default streaming service for future track saves. Users can change this default selection at any time under settings. The ‘Add to Music App‘ feature can also be used from an artist’s Sound Detail Page.

Creating Greater Value for Artists and Rightsholders

Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development, shared that TikTok is already a powerful platform for music discovery and promotion. The ‘Add to Music App‘ feature takes this further by directly linking song discovery on TikTok and song consumption on a music streaming service. This direct link simplifies the process for music fans to enjoy full-length songs on their preferred music streaming service, thereby generating increased value for artists and rightsholders.

Partnership with Amazon Music and Spotify

Amazon Music and Spotify, among other major music streaming services, have partnered with TikTok to launch this feature. Karolina Joynathsing, the Director of Business Development for Amazon Music, expressed excitement about this partnership, stating that the ‘Add to Music App‘ feature will make it easier for fans to listen to the music they love while aiding artists in building a fandom.

Similarly, Sten Garmark, the Vice President and Global Head of Consumer Experience at Spotify, emphasized the goal of creating seamless ways for users to save songs to Spotify for enjoyment whenever and however they choose to listen. He added that Spotify’s mission is to bring artists and fans together across any platform or device, further simplifying the process for users to find and enjoy their favorite audio.

The ‘Add to Music App‘ feature is currently being rolled out to users in the US and UK, with plans to extend it to more markets shortly.
