OpenAI's GPTs: Revolutionizing Customizable Chatbots

At its first tech conference, OpenAI announced an innovative service that allows users to create personalized versions of ChatGPT. These chatbots, or GPTs, are customizable and cater to various user needs. This article examines the features of these GPTs, their potential applications, and OpenAI’s stance on data security and privacy.

OpenAI, during its inaugural tech conference, unveiled a new service that enables users to create unique versions of ChatGPT tailored to their specific requirements. This exciting development, GPTs, indicates a significant evolution from the Custom Instructions launched in July.

GPTs are customizable chatbots that can accommodate many use cases across various scenarios. For instance, businesses can create GPTs exclusive to their employees, while parents can design one to assist their children in solving complex math problems. OpenAI revealed these features to offer users some control over their AI, responding to the growing demand for more flexibility and customization.

Creating a Personalized GPT

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman demonstrated the process of creating a GPT at the conference. It involves subscribing to ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Enterprise for business owners. Users then select the ‘Create a GPT‘ option on their account, and the GPT Builder tool prompts them to specify their requirements. Altman illustrated this by instructing the platform to create a chatbot providing business advice to tech startups.

The technology subsequently generates a preliminary AI model, which users can modify by assigning a name and thumbnail image to the chatbot. Additionally, users can upload their data files to the AI for further refinement and enable extra capabilities like internet browsing or integrating the DALL-E image generator.

Launching and Utilizing Your Custom Chatbot

After completing the customization process, users can save their chatbot for later modifications or share it publicly through a link. The service supports select third-party services, enabling the chatbot to access data from emails, databases, and more. An example of this was demonstrated through a live test, where a user connected their Google Calendar schedule to the custom AI via the Zapier tool.

Data Consent and Security

OpenAI assures that chats between users and their personal GPT will not be shared with others or the company without explicit user consent. However, OpenAI has systems to review user-generated GPTs to ensure they adhere to company policy and do not engage in fraudulent activity, hateful content, or adult themes.

Future Developments

The GPT Builder, currently in beta, is available to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers. In November, OpenAI plans to launch the GPT Store, showcasing creations by verified builders. It will also enable users to monetize their chatbots based on usage in the future. This advancement opens up opportunities for AI enthusiasts and developers alike, making it a development to watch closely.
